On October 10th, we gathered with key figures from the Bali villa owners to our Round Table Talk to discuss about pressing issues surrounding the impact of tourism on Balinese tradition and the island’s sustainability. Attendees included Alex, Mareike, and Wira from Villa Marlex and Mango Sky, Corina from Nyanou Villa, Tony and Elen from Bingin Sun & Moon, Janis from Villa Owner in Ungasan, and Jan from Villa Purnama.  I’m Jason, a journalist from Bukit Vista. The Dilution of Balinese Tradition

Bali Tourism: Then vs Now

Tourist Characteristics Comparison

Tourist Characteristics Back Then - 1970s Now - 2020s
Primary Motivations Adventure seekers, nature lovers, explorers. Tourists were drawn to Bali's spiritual and natural appeal. Investors, opportunists, financial gain seekers. Focus on property and financial opportunities.
Type of Tourism Cultural and nature-based tourism (surfing, temples, exploring). Commodity-based tourism, focusing on profits and luxury developments.
Connection to Culture Strong connection with local traditions and Balinese culture. Weaker connection to local traditions, more focused on consumption.
Economic Impact Contributed modestly to the local economy, supporting small businesses. Strong economic boost but concentrated on large-scale developments.
Environmental Awareness Higher appreciation for Bali's natural environment, focused on preservation. Less focus on environmental impact, contributing to unsustainable growth.

The round table talk began with concerns about how modern tourism is gradually diluting Balinese tradition and the essence of its culture. Historically, Bali attracted adventurers and explorers who came to connect with the island’s natural beauty—whether it was to surf, explore temples, or experience the vibrant landscapes. Jan, who grew up in Bali, noted that these early tourists respected and immersed themselves in local traditions, contributing modestly to the economy while supporting small businesses. This created a balance between tourism and the preservation of Bali’s culture and environment.

However, today’s tourists often see Bali as an opportunity for financial gain, particularly in property investment and luxury developments. This shift, while economically beneficial, has resulted in unbalanced development, especially in areas like Canggu, where rapid expansion has disrupted traditional ways of life. The emphasis on profit has weakened the connection to Balinese culture and contributed to unsustainable growth, posing long-term risks to both the environment and the island’s cultural heritage.

Unsustainable Development and Governmental Gaps

Janis sharing his thought about rapid expansion in Canggu

Attendees expressed their concerns about unsustainable development trends, particularly in areas like Canggu, where rapid expansion has nearly erased iconic rice paddies. There was widespread agreement that the government’s lack of oversight has allowed damaging developments to continue unchecked. Janis mentioned that it is the responsibility of locals and the government to address these issues. However, Jing pointed out that everyone—villa owners, tourists, and local businesses—has a role in ensuring Bali’s development aligns with sustainable principles and respects Balinese tradition.

The Power of Villa Owners and Sustainable Tourism

Jing emphasized that villa owners, such as Alex and Janis, hold significant influence in shaping tourist behavior. By encouraging guests to visit sustainable attractions, like the Sanur Promenade, villa owners can help promote environmentally-conscious tourism. The Sanur Promenade, which replaced roads with a 5.5 km walking strip along the beach, was highlighted as a model for sustainable development. This project not only created economic opportunities for local businesses but also reduced carbon emissions, embodying a harmonious balance between the environment, economy, and Bali’s spiritual values. Jing’s insights resonated with the group, particularly Alex, who appreciated the conversation and noted that while these issues are recognized, action has been slow. Jing’s explanations clarified how small actions by individuals and businesses can contribute to sustainable development, while still preserving Balinese tradition.

Shaping the Future of Balinese Tradition

The Round Table Talk concluded with a renewed sense of responsibility and optimism. Jing’s guidance emphasized that each person has a role in promoting sustainable, balanced development for Bali. By guiding tourists toward eco-friendly attractions, villa owners can help shape a tourism landscape that respects and preserves Balinese tradition. Aligning modern development with the island’s traditional values, as embodied in Tri Hita Karana, ensures that Bali will continue to thrive as a destination that harmonizes its cultural, environmental, and economic aspects.
