Hello, I’m Jey, currently interning with the Human Resource team at Bukit Vista. You might have come across my previous blogposts and articles, where I’ve shared insights about our company culture and stories from our dedicated employees.
I’ve experienced a significant transformation during my internship at Bukit Vista. This is my story, a determined individual from MSIB (Magang Studi Independen Bersertifikat) Kampus Merdeka Batch 5, and how my time at Bukit Vista became a pivotal moment in my career.
Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone
My journey at Airlangga University in Surabaya was marked by a deep introspection about my future. As a Psychology major, I was always intrigued by the complexities of human behavior. This fascination led me to pursue various roles – from being a pre-school teacher to engaging as a peer counselor, a sexual harassment victim advocate, an activist, and even leading organizations. Each of these roles was a step towards understanding human interactions and mental processes in diverse settings.
However, despite these enriching experiences, I felt a growing unease. The more I delved into Psychology, the more I realized how vast and unexplored my own potential was. This realization was unsettling because, in many ways, my life in Surabaya felt comfortable yet unchallenging. I was doing important work, but there was a part of me that yearned for something more – a professional environment where I could apply my academic knowledge and personal skills in new, untested ways.
When the MSIB program was announced, it seemed like a beacon in the haze. It offered an avenue to break free from the ordinary and dive into the unknown. The decision wasn’t easy, especially since I was already committed to the internship at Anak Ceria Pre-school. This role had given me a chance to apply my psychological insights in nurturing young minds, an experience both fulfilling and enlightening. Yet, I knew deep down that to grow, I had to step out of this comfort zone.
The move to Bukit Vista was more than a geographical shift from Surabaya to Bali; it was a leap into a realm of professional challenges I had never faced before. I wanted to test my psychological insights in a corporate setting, understand employee behaviors, and see how psychological principles apply in business dynamics. This transition was about confronting the unknown, pushing boundaries, and discovering new facets of my capabilities.
In Surabaya, life had become predictable. The routine of academia and the familiarity of my roles had created a safe bubble. But safe doesn’t always equate to fulfilling. I longed to feel the adrenaline of new challenges, the satisfaction of overcoming professional hurdles, and the growth that comes from navigating uncharted territories.
Joining Bukit Vista represented more than a career shift; it was a personal journey of transformation. It was about taking all that I had learned in Psychology and applying it in an entirely new context. I was ready to embrace the uncertainty, ready to see what lay beyond the comfortable boundaries of my life in Surabaya.
The Call of Bali
When I chose Bukit Vista, nestled in the vibrant, opportunity-rich environment of Bali, it was more than just an intuitive decision. It was a conscious move towards an island known for its exceptional tolerance and inclusivity. For me, Bali is a haven of acceptance, where diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and identities are celebrated. For me, as a queer individual, this aspect of Bali held a profound significance.
Bali’s reputation for tolerance is well-earned. The island’s unique blend of Hindu culture, infused with a global perspective due to its status as a tourist hub, has fostered an environment of open-mindedness and respect. This atmosphere of acceptance was a crucial factor in my decision to join Bukit Vista. I saw Bali as a safe place where I could grow and express my potential without the fear of discrimination or judgment.
This sense of safety and freedom is vital, especially in today’s world where issues of discrimination and intolerance still pose significant challenges in many places. For me, Bali and Bukit Vista represented a place where I could be my authentic self, where my identity as a queer individual wouldn’t overshadow my professional aspirations or personal growth. It offered a space where I could explore my potential in an atmosphere free from biases and stereotypes.
In choosing Bukit Vista and Bali, I was not just seeking professional growth; I was seeking a community where I could belong, contribute, and flourish without reservations. Bali, with its ethos of tolerance and acceptance, appeared as the ideal place for someone like me to expand horizons and break new ground.
A Journey of Growth and Discovery
The moment I stepped into Bukit Vista, I embarked on a journey of profound transformation that reshaped my understanding of both professional and personal growth. Bukit Vista was not just a company; it became a catalyst for change, urging me to embrace challenges that were once foreign to me. This environment of constant learning and adaptation was exhilarating. It was a stark contrast to the academic confines of university life, offering practical, hands-on experiences that no textbook could provide.
At Bukit Vista, every day was a new adventure, filled with opportunities to push the boundaries of my comfort zone. The team’s encouragement and support played a pivotal role in this transformation. I was not only learning new skills but also discovering aspects of myself I hadn’t known existed. This exploration went beyond professional competencies; it was about building resilience, embracing versatility, and developing a mindset geared towards continuous improvement.
During my five months at Bukit Vista, I dove into the multifaceted world of human resources. Talent acquisition and CV screening became more than just tasks; they were puzzles that helped me understand the complexities of the human workforce. I learned to discern potential and aptitude in the sea of applicants, a skill that proved invaluable in understanding human psychology in a professional context.
However, the role that truly captivated me was in Public Relations. This was where I found my calling. In PR, I learned the art of external communication – a dance between conveying the company’s ethos and understanding the audience’s pulse. Leadership and project management were not just theoretical concepts here; they were realities that I lived and breathed. Managing projects and leading a team taught me about responsibility, strategic thinking, and the importance of clear, empathetic communication.
A Rich Learning Experience
Reflecting on my time at Bukit Vista, I can confidently say that those five months were more impactful than my entire 3.5 years at university. The practical insights, the real-world challenges, and the dynamic work environment provided a holistic learning experience that was both enriching and empowering.
At Bukit Vista, I didn’t just grow as a professional; I evolved as a person. The skills and experiences I gained have become integral to my identity, shaping my approach to challenges and opportunities alike. This transformation was not just about acquiring new skills; it was about redefining my potential and reimagining my future.
Leading Projects and Embracing Innovation
My journey at Bukit Vista was marked by significant milestones, particularly in leading projects and embracing technological innovations. A standout moment was spearheading the BV E-Talk 23, a major project that became a testament to my growth and capabilities. Attracting over 350 participants, BV E-Talk 23 became a symbol of my ability to engage and captivate an audience, bringing together diverse individuals for a shared learning experience.
The Success of BV E-Talk 24
Building on the success of BV E-Talk 23, I took on the role of project manager for BV E-Talk 24. This event was a step-up, involving intricate planning and coordination. It featured CEOs from prominent startups and seasoned industry professionals, adding a layer of complexity and prestige to the task. Managing this event was like conducting an orchestra – every element, from logistics to speaker management, had to be in perfect harmony. The event, though challenging, was a significant achievement in my career, showcasing my ability to lead, innovate, and execute at high levels.
Leveraging AI in My Daily Work
At Bukit Vista, innovation was not just a buzzword; it was a practice. I had the unique opportunity to delve into the world of Artificial Intelligence, particularly its application in property management. Utilizing ChatGPT 4 was a game-changer; it revolutionized the way I approached tasks, making processes more efficient and creative solutions more accessible. This tool wasn’t just about automation; it was about enhancing human potential.
I took this opportunity to develop my own GPT model, tailored to assist in brainstorming and streamlining work processes. This personal project was more than just a technical endeavor; it was a journey into the future of technology in business. It allowed me to explore the possibilities of AI in enhancing communication strategies, analyzing data, and making informed decisions.
My time at Bukit Vista was a blend of leadership, innovation, and technological exploration. Leading BV E-Talk 23 and 24 provided a platform to showcase my project management skills and ability to engage diverse audiences. Meanwhile, embracing AI in property management opened new avenues for efficiency and creativity. These experiences at Bukit Vista were not just about managing tasks; they were about pushing the boundaries of what is possible, both in project management and in the innovative use of technology.
