Autonomy means the squad decides what to build, how to build and how to work together while doing it. Autonomy is motivating. Autonomy makes a fast.
However, there are boundaries to an autonomous squad – squad mission, product strategy & short-term goals. Be autonomous, but don’t suboptimise. Although an autonomous squad has their own mission, they need to be aligned to product strategy, company priorities and other squads. Ultimately, squads should be moving towards a common goal.
