How will the tourism trends in 2021?

Bukit Vista believes that everyone who works in the world of tourism and hospitality hopes that the COVID-19 pandemic will end soon. That way our livelihoods can return to normal. However, what kind of normal would it be if the COVID-19 pandemic ended?

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the fabric of various sectors of the world. Especially for the hospitality sector. With this change, in 2021, a new tourism trends has emerged. By understanding it, we can adapt and innovate to be able to continue to exist in any situation.

According to The Jakarta Post, there are at least 5 tourism trends in 2021 that are expected to emerge after the COVID-19 pandemic:

Tighter protocols

Batam Tourism Polytechnic, a private tourism university in Riau, has predicted that modes of transportation will continue to enforce health protocols. It aims to ensure travelers’ safety.

Second, the airlines are currently requiring travelers to present negative COVID-19 test results. Indeed, along with other documents, prior to departure. It is possible that this procedure will continue in the future.

There has been the demand for airports to provide rapid test services for travelers. Particularly those located in popular tourist destinations. For instance, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Yogyakarta International Airport, Husein Sastranegara International Airport in Bandung, West Java, and Supadio International Airport in Pontianak offer such services.

Batam Tourism Polytechnic also predicted that travelers would spend more time for preparing their trips. In other words,  travelers would allocate additional time to book their tickets.

Hygiene

The importance of cleanliness and hygiene has increased for travelers. Hand sanitizer, tissues, and masks have become essential items. Moreover, they will continue to be indispensable for some time. Tourist establishments should respond to this tendency by prioritizing health protocols to win visitors’ trust.

Touchless tourism

A touchless environment may become the norm as the pandemic continues. The use of technology is necessary for a hands-free environment. It is including touchless document scanning, voice commands, and motion sensors. It aims to reduce high-touch surfaces and physical interaction.

5 Tourism Trends After COVID-19

Closer destinations

Hermawan Kartajaya, the founder and chairman of marketing consulting firm MarkPlus, told kompas.com in April that, after the pandemic, tourists would opt for closer destinations. He added, they might hesitate to plan long-distance trips. Besides some countries might retain travel restrictions as well.

Domestic tourism and staycations

Online searches for “staycation” in Indonesia surged after several locations began to ease large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) in June. Hermawan predicted that domestic tourism and staycations would be the tourism trends in 2021. Staycations trends increase as people want to travel to nearby locations.

“This is where hotels and other establishments can ensure travelers’ health, safety and flexibility,” he said.
